Transporting oil filled transformer
Disposal of PCB contaminated oil may be via chemical detoxification or via incineration. Transformer disposal is preceded by dismantling of the equipment and the separation of cleanable and recyclable components. Metallic components are solvent cleaned to levels specified by the EPA until regarded as “Non-PCB” to enable recycling into commerce. Filling the transformer with oil Friday May 26th, 2017 With the term “filling” the transformer we mean both filling newly installed equipment for the first time on the final site, and filling as a result of maintenance or internal inspections that have requested the equipment to be emptied. The oil can only be filled in the transformer which satisfies the standard specifications mentioned by the manufacturer of transformer. Normally Transformer is supplied with gas filled i.e. the Main Tank of Transformer is filled with Nitrogen gas under some specified pressure to prevent any degradation of the insulation of core and winding. Transformer Technologies operates multiple vacuum trucks to remove and transport your used dielectric fluid. At our Salem, Oregon facility, we have installed dechlorination equipment capable of processing oils up to 49 PPM of PCB. The oil is processed until the PCB level is verified to be below 1 PPM, then sold to a variety of end users. From industrial oil filled transformers to commercial liquid filled transformers, Bay Power is the only transformer supplier you’ll need. We carry only the best transformers in the business from top transformer manufacturers to ensure you get the highest level of both quality and performance. 4.11.2 The thermometer bulb / probe is connected by capillary tube to the indicator. The bulb / probe shall be fitted into the thermometer pocket provided in the transformer main tank cover near the hottest oil region. Before fitting the bulb / probe, thermometer pockets shou ld be part filled with transformer oil. Northern Transformer Corporation is a North American manufacturer of liquid filled transformers of the highest quality and reliability serving the North American market since 1981. From custom specialty transformers to large utility substations, Northern Transformer designs, engineers and manufactures liquid filled transformers to fit all needs.

A PCB oil is only a hazardous materials subject to USDOT regulations in transportation if there is 1 lb or greater of PCBs in a single packaging. 1 quart at 550 ppm would be well below 1 lb of PCBs, therefore it is not a HazMat when transported. A PCB oil of this concentration would be subject to TSCA regulations of which I am not very familiar. On average new oil is not hazmat except in California. Used oil is another matter. PCBs were not in an oil as manufactured. It was arcing and sparking in a transformer surrounded by oil that produced the PCB. Changing to a new oil blend stopped the process of PCBs being created. Most of this occurred back in the 80’s. Transformer oil or insulating oil is an oil that is stable at high temperatures and has excellent electrical insulating properties. It is used in oil-filled transformers, some types of high-voltage capacitors, fluorescent lamp ballasts, and some types of high-voltage switches and circuit breakers. Its functions are to insulate, suppress corona discharge and arcing, and to serve as a coolant. Transformer oil is most often based on mineral oil, but alternative formulations with better engineering RECYCLE ALL USED OIL. While being recycled, used oil is regulated by 40 CFR 279. Use resulting in chemical or physical change or contamination may also subject it to regulation as hazardous waste. Under federal regulations, used oil is a solid waste managed under 40 CFR 279. However, in California, used oil is managed as hazardous waste until Transformer Technologies operates multiple vacuum trucks to remove and transport your used dielectric fluid. At our Salem, Oregon facility, we have installed dechlorination equipment capable of processing oils up to 49 PPM of PCB. The oil is processed until the PCB level is verified to be below 1 PPM, then sold to a variety of end users. Most oil filled transformers are sealed. The oil may burn if the oil filled transformer fails and there is an electrical arc inside the power transformer and it is powerful enough and lasts long enough to rupture the transformer tank and cause the oil to spill and then burn. This does not happen very often.
Many transformers are dispatched without oil and filled with nitrogen gas. Transformer oils are transported in specially processed barrels or tanks. Weights and

Some examples include reaction vessels and heat exchangers. While oil-filled equipment is not subject to the same level of scrutiny as bulk storage containers, oil-filled equipment is still subject to the general provisions of the SPCC regulations.

Oil is normally not filled in Bigger Transformers/Reactor s during transit or oil is filled upto core level of the transformer. Nitrogen makes the transformer not to abosrb external moisture during transit. This notrogen is taken out by Vaccuming the transformer prior to oil fill. A Gauge is normally provided in the Tranformer Oil Outlet Valve to indicate the Nitrogen/Vaccum Pressure. Afterwards Oil is filled in. should open a sealed transformer. The gas space above the oil is filled with nitrogen that could cause asphyxiation or death. Monitoring of the oxygen levels inside a transformer should always be performed when entering a transformer. If the delivering carrier is willing to permit internal inspection of the transformer on the installation, commissioning and maintenance of oil-filled transformers. This guide is necessarily general in nature.
