JACOS started oil sands activities in the Athabasca area in 1978 on leases held by Petro-Canada, Canadian Occidental (Nexen) and Imperial Oil to form the PCEJ group. It was the first Asian-owned oil company to exploit the Athabasca oil sands. Canada is home to the world’s third-largest hydrocarbon basin – the oil sands – which equates to 97% of Canada’s oil reserves. This long-term resource offers energy potential – about 1.7 trillion barrels of oil can be recovered, of which 165 billion barrels are in the oil sands. CNOOC International has assets in oil sands, shale gas and offshore in Canada. Our oil sands business is a key part of CNOOC International’s global portfolio. Our Long Lake facility, located in northern Alberta just south of Fort McMurray, is a SAGD operation with production capacity of 72,000 barrels of bitumen a day. Canada used to be in a similar position to the US in that offshore oil was cheaper than domestic oil, so the oil pipelines used to run westward from the east coast to Central Canada, now they are being reversed to carry cheaper domestic oil sands production from Alberta to the east coast.
